Egyptian Internet activist: Let’s design social media that drives real change

Wael Ghonim, one of the figureheads of the 2011 Egyptian uprising and an iconic digital activist, told a conference that people need to think about how to design social media experiences that promote civility and reward thoughtfulness.

“Five years ago, I said, ‘If you want to liberate society, all you need is the Internet’. Today, I believe if we want to liberate society, we first need to liberate the Internet,” Ghonim told a TED Global conference.

Ghonim said he was invited by TED Global to talk about why he thinks social media is broken, and what can be done about it.
