Egyptian human rights lawyer says “fearful of speaking”

Egyptian human rights lawyer, Gamal Eid, spoke from Cairo on Germany’s international broadcaster DW TV about his fear of the Egyptian regime.

The programme he appeared on was debating whether German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a mistake inviting Egyptian President Abd-al-Fattah al-Sisi to visit Berlin.

“I have been a human rights lawyer for 25 years. I am fearful while I am speaking to you because a trumped up case could be brought [against me].”

Critics of the regime, he said, “are either dead, in prison, living abroad or being smeared”.
